How to get a Certificate of Existence from the Montana Secretary of State

A certificate of good standing in the State of Montana is called a Certificate of Existence. You can order by mail, in person, or online, but we recommend online. Online processing costs $5.00 and is immediate. Normal processing takes up to 5 days, plus additional time for mailing, and costs $5.00. Expedited service is available for $20.00 more and should take less than 1 day, plus additional time for mailing.

Note: The Department of Revenue also has a Certificate of Good Standing that can be ordered free of charge. This certificate shows that your filing and payment requirements are current with the Department of Revenue and that the taxpayer has no outstanding tax obligation.

Online:

Go to their website and follow the instructions provided to search, pay for and print a certificate. You will be able to view and print the certificate yourself right away.


By Mail:

Requests by mail will be expedited only if paying the additional fee. You will want to provide the business name, payment, return address information, specific request and a daytime phone number for any questions.

In Person:

Documents requested in person will be expedited and provided by the next business day only if paying the additional fee. You will want to have your payment handy.


How much does a Montana Certificate of Existence cost?

$5.00 online and normal processing.
$25.00 for expedited next day processing.

Is expedited processing available?

Yes. Online processing is immediate at no additional charge. An expedited service fee of $20.00 is available by mail or in person, in addition to the regular $5.00 fee.

How will the Certificate of Existence come back after I order from the Montana Secretary of State?

If ordered online, you will be able to print it yourself. If requested by mail or in person, it will be mailed by regular mail, unless you request otherwise and provide a pre-addressed prepaid envelope or UPS/Fed Ex account number. You may also request that they call you so that you can pick it up from their office. Return service by fax is available for an additional $5.00 fee. Return service by email is not available.
