How to resign as registered agent in California:

To resign as registered agent in California, you must provide the completed Resignation of Agent form to the Secretary of State by mail or in person.

Do you have to notify the California entity you’re serving as registered agent for before you resign or after?

The Secretary of State will give written notice of the resignation to the entity.

Is there a fee to resign as the California registered agent for a corporation, LLC, or other business entity?

There is no fee required in California to resign as registered agent.
Requests for expedited processing must be submitted in person:
$15 additional for in person processing.
$350 additional for 24 hour expedited processing.
$750 additional for same day expedited processing.

How long will it take the state to process the California resignation of registered agent filing?

Current processing times can be obtained on their website at: http://www.sos.ca.gov/business/be/processing-times.htm
Expedite Processing: depends on type of service requested, plus additional time for return mailing.

The Secretary of State will file stamp one copy of the form and return it to you by mail, only if an exact copy is submitted along with the form to be filed.

How long do you still have to serve as the registered agent after the filing? How long will you have to legally accept service of process after you’ve resigned as agent?

California Code 1503, states that once the resignation is filed the authority of the agent for service of process to act in that capacity will cease.

If a company is administratively dissolved, it does not terminate the authority of its registered agent, unless a Resignation of Agent form is filed.
