Tax Exemption For Louisiana Non-Profits

INFORMATION ON APPLYING FOR TAX EXEMPTION IN LOUISIANA

Because I am a non-profit, does this mean I am automatically sales tax exempt in Louisiana?

No. LA non-profit organizations are still required to pay sales tax, unless they are specifically exempted. You can apply to obtain Louisiana sales tax exemption by filing form R-1048, the Application for Exemption from Collection of Louisiana State Sales Tax with the Louisiana Department of Revenue.

Is my LA non-profit able to obtain federal tax exemption?

You can apply for federal tax exemption with the IRS. They will in turn send you a Letter of Determination stating your tax exempt status if granted after the long review process.

Once you have Federal tax exempt 501c3 status you can work with the Department of Revenue to apply for Louisiana tax exemptions.

Can my Louisiana non-profit obtain income and franchise tax exemption?

Yes, your Louisiana non-profit can be exempt from LA’s franchise tax by sending a copy of your Letter of Determination form the IRS to the Louisiana Department of Revenue.
