How to Get a Maine Certificate of Existence

A certificate of good standing in the State of Maine is called a Certificate of Existence. You can order by fax, mail, email, phone, in person, or online, but we recommend online. Online processing is immediate and costs $30. Normal processing takes up to 7 days, plus additional time for mailing, and costs $30. Expedited service is available for $50-$100 more and should take less than 1 day, plus additional time for mailing.

Go to their website under online services and follow the instructions provided on the interactive corporate services page to search and print a certificate. You will be able to authenticate, view and print the certificate yourself immediately. You will want to have your credit card handy.

By Mail:

You will want to provide the business name, payment, specific request and a daytime phone number for any questions.

By Fax:

Credit Card Payment Authorization form required. You will want to provide the business name, specific request and a daytime phone number for any questions on a normal fax cover sheet. You can request they email or fax the certificate back to you, however, be sure that an original document is not required.

By Email:

By Phone:

Called in requests are accepted and they can give you a more specific timeframe for processing. You will want to have the business name and credit card handy when making your call.

Requested documents can possibly be provided the same day. However, it may take up to 7 business days, depending on the current workload. You will want to have your payment handy.

How much does a Maine Certificate of Existence cost?

To register as a Maine Corporation. Fees are as follows:

$30 for online and normal processing.
$10 for online and normal processing (non-profit only).
$100 for expedited immediate processing.
$50 for 24 hour processing.

Is expedited processing available?

Yes. An expedited service fee of $100 is required for immediate processing, in addition to the regular $30 fee. A fee of $50 is required for 24 hour processing, in addition to the regular $30 fee.

How long does it take to get a Certificate of Existence?

Online processing: immediate.
Expedited immediate processing: same day, plus additional time for mailing.
Expedited 24 hour processing: 24 business hours, plus additional time for mailing.
Normal processing: 5-7 business days, plus additional time for mailing.

How will the Certificate of Existence come back after I order from the Maine Secretary of State?

It will be mailed by regular mail, unless you request otherwise and provide a pre-addressed prepaid envelope or UPS/Fed Ex account number. Return service by fax or email is also available upon request. However, be sure that an original document is not required.
