Internet Speed and Equipment Requirements for VoIP
Using a VoIP phone service is simple. In most cases, all you need is a reliable internet connection and a device that can access your online account or app.
Our service is designed to work like a standard business phone number. You can call, text, check voicemail, save contacts, review call logs, and manage your business communications from one place. To get the best experience, the most important requirement is not just fast internet, but stable, high-quality internet.
What You Need to Use Our VoIP Service
To use VoIP phone service successfully, you will need:
- A high-speed, high-quality internet connection
- A smartphone or other supported device for the phone app
- Access to your online account for managing settings and call history
For most customers, that is enough to get started.
Minimum Internet Speed Recommended for VoIP
For reliable calling and app performance, your connection should have at least:
- 5 Mbps download speed
- 5 Mbps upload speed
If you plan to use the phone app on your mobile carrier’s data plan, that is usually enough as well. Even in many rural areas, mobile data speeds are commonly at or above 10 Mbps, which should be stable enough to support app use.
Internet Quality Matters More Than Raw Speed
A fast connection alone does not guarantee good call quality. VoIP service depends heavily on connection stability.
For the best experience, your internet should also have:
- Jitter below 30ms: Jitter is how variable the response time is for your internet connection.
- Low latency: Latency (or ping) is the time it takes for data to travel to and from your server—lower latency means faster travel time.
If your connection has high jitter or latency, you may notice issues like delayed audio, choppy calls, or inconsistent call performance. Most modern internet connections meet this requirement handily.
How to Test Your Internet for VoIP
You can test your connection using LibreSpeed – Speed Test.
When reviewing your results, check for:
- At least 5 Mbps upload and download
- Jitter below 30ms
- Latency as low as possible
This is a good first step if you want to confirm whether your internet is ready for VoIP service.
Using the Phone App vs. Forwarding Calls
You can use VoIP service directly through our complimentary Phone App or forward calls to a private phone number. These two options work differently in the following ways:
When using the Phone App
The Phone App gives you the full VoIP experience. This is the best option if you want to use all available phone features.
With the app, you can:
- Make outbound calls that display your assigned business number
- Send and receive text messages
- Access voicemail tied to your VoIP number
- Review your call log and see the actual number of incoming callers
- Stay connected to your business line from your device
To receive calls in the app, you must be logged in to the internet.
When forwarding calls to another number
Call forwarding can be useful, but it has limitations.
When calls are routed to another number:
- Incoming calls will appear to come from your assigned VoIP number, not the actual caller
- If you miss the call, you will need to log in to the Phone App to see the true caller number in your call log
- Outbound calls will not show your assigned VoIP number unless you place the call through the Phone App
- Text messaging is not available through forwarded calls
- Voicemail will go to the forwarded number’s voicemail box and greeting, not your VoIP voicemail
If you want your assigned business number to handle calling, texting, and voicemail the way customers expect, the phone app is the better choice.
