Do You Own An Oregon Business? Here’s How To Act As Your Own Registered Agent
If you are an Oregon business owner, or plan on starting a business in Oregon, you are required by state law to maintain a registered agent for your company. The registered agent accepts service of process and official documents from the state on behalf of your business, and they must have a physical street address (no PO boxes).
You need to provide a physical street address because this is the location where your business will officially receive service of process and other important, time-sensitive documents. The registered agent is your connection with the state for this important mail. Because of the nature of the documents, it is required that the registered agent is located at an address that holds regular business hours.
How to be your own registered agent in Oregon
If you do not mind your name and address on public record, you may act as your own registered agent in Oregon. Keep in mind that you must keep regular business hours at this address, as to be available to accept certain documents in person.
To act as your own registered agent, simply fill out your name and address on the formation documents in the spaces where it asks for registered agent information when forming your business.
How to change your registered agent
If you have already formed your company and wish to be listed as the registered agent, then file a Change of Registered Agent/Address Form with the Oregon secretary of state. If you mail in the form it will take roughly one week to process, and same goes for a faxed-in filing. If you deliver it in person or mail your form via FedEx, processing will only take a day. Here are some pointers for filing the Change of Registered Agent form:
- You will need your registry number – if you do a name search on the Oregon secretary of state website, you will be able to find your number. This is an identification number for your business, given to it by the state when you form your business.
- Put your name and address in the spaces where it asks for new registered agent information.

What to know if you do business in multiple states
If you plan on taking your Oregon business to other states, you will need to designate a registered agent who has a physical street address in each state you wish to register in—you can’t act as registered agent for your business in states outside your home state unless you have a physical address in each of those states. This is where many businesses choose to hire a third-party registered agent service to handle their registered agent requirements.
