Non-Profit Tax Exemption In Michigan

INFORMATION ON REGISTERING YOUR NON-PROFIT FOR TAX EXEMPTION IN MICHIGAN

What is the first step to becoming tax exempt?

First you will want to apply for 501c3 Federal tax exempt status with the IRS. After you obtain Federal tax exempt status, they will send you a Letter of Determination stating this, which you will need in order to apply for further tax exemptions.

How long does it take to obtain tax exempt status with the IRS?

It is an extensive review, taking between six to nine months or longer.

How do I become tax exempt in Michigan?

You will have to provide proof that your organization is Michigan non-profit.

There is a Michigan Sales and Use Tax Certificate of Exemption form that you may complete and give that form to your vendors, making a claim for exemption from sales or use tax. Any non-profit organization that is eligible to claim a federal exemption would use this form to claim an exemption from sales and/or use taxes in Michigan.
