Charity Registration In Missouri

FREE GUIDE TO CHARITY REGISTRATION IN MISSOURI

Do I have to register my non-profit corporation as a charity in Missouri?

In Missouri, any person or entity who does business in this state, or holds property in this state for any charitable purpose, and who solicits funds or donations for any charitable purpose is considered a charity and must register as one with the Missouri Attorney General’s office. However, the following kinds of charitable organizations are exempt from registering:

  • Religious organizations.
  • Any organization deemed tax exempt by the IRS under codes 501c3, c7, or c8, in which none of the net earnings of the corporation go to a private party or individual associated with the organization.
  • Educational institutions and their related foundations.
  • Any organization where solicitation of donations is confined to its membership.
  • Hospitals and auxiliaries, as long as none of the individuals collecting the donations are paid solicitors.

How do I register my non-profit corporation as a charity in Missouri?

To register a charity in Missouri, you need to complete the Charitable Organization Initial Registration Statement and pay, with check or money order, the $15 registration fee. The initial registration statement does require some financial information such as the name of the banks where the funds will be deposited and how the charity plans to solicit. You will also need the names and addresses of any of the charity’s paid solicitors.

Are there any annual renewal requirements for Missouri charities?

After you register your Missouri nonprofit organization, within 75 days of the end of the charity’s fiscal year, you must file a Charitable Organization Annual Registration Statement, which is a condensed version of the initial registration statement. You must also pay the $15 registration fee each year when you submit the annual registration statement.

How long will it take Missouri to process my charity registration?

Response times vary greatly, however, when properly registered, Missouri will mail a paper notification to the charity stating that it has been properly registered.

Does Missouri accept Unified Registration Statement forms?

Missouri does accept URS forms; however, the registration must satisfy each question asked on Missouri’s registration form.
