What Is a Registered Agent?

A registered agent is a person or company designated to receive service of process and official mail on behalf of your business. Registered agents are also known as statutory agents, resident agents, and agents for service of process.

Each state requires registered business entities (such as an LLC, a corporation, or a nonprofit) to appoint a registered agent on their state formation documents. These formation documents (often called articles of organization or articles of incorporation) are filed in the state where the business operates. The information listed in the formation documents becomes public record.

If you hire a registered agent, they should be knowledgeable enough and have the resources to help you form your new business entity with the state. This service should be able to personally contact and work with your state in order to help get your business up and running.

While appointing a registered agent is a legal requirement to starting a business, a good registered agent should do much more than check a box on a document. Beyond receiving and forwarding legal notices to your business, your registered agent should also provide:

  • A local street address for public documents
  • Articles of Organization or Incorporation filed with the state
  • An organizer signature on state paperwork
  • An operating agreement or corporate bylaws to get you started
  • A domain name, website, email, and phone number for your business on day one
  • A commitment to never sell your data
  • Help as your business grows (think trademark registration, expanding into new states, and securing more domain names)

When you’re starting a business, early choices harden fast. Once your personal information is online, it’s usually there for good. And you only get one shot at making a professional first impression with potential customers. When you hire Northwest as your registered agent, we provide a Business Identity you can use right out of the gate. This includes a domain name, website, email address, phone line, and business address that will shield your personal info and help you create a credible, professional image.

Why Hire Northwest?

There are lots of companies providing registered agent service. None like us. We have no shareholders, no phone extensions, no hidden fees, no gimmicks, and no sales staff using teleprompters to answer the phone. We handle everything in-house, protect your privacy, and offer unparalleled support—all without being annoying.

Locally-Scanned Documents

We scan every document you receive right where you receive it—in our office. No outsourcing. No third parties. Just local employees handing your sensitive documents.

Your Own Corporate Guides®

Northwest’s Corporate Guides® will help you navigate the odd world of state bureaucracy. Call and talk to someone who knows what they’re talking about.

Privacy by Default®

We never sell your data. Ever. We list OUR business address on your public filings instead of yours. And we don’t make you opt in to protect your privacy. It’s automatic.

Free Mail Scanning

As your registered agent, we accept ALL state and legal mail. But we’ll also scan and digitally upload normal business mail—up to 5 docs per year—FREE.

Just the Right Size

We’re not so big that clients are just a number, but we’re not so small that we have to hire other registered agents to do our job. We’re the sweet spot for reliability and customer service.

Instant Service

You’ll get an instant account with access to every state form you’ll ever need, with tips, tools, and reminders for growing and maintaining your business.

Free Identity Services

We’ll provide you with all the tools you need to start talking to customers on day one: a domain name, website, phone number, and email address. Built in-house with room to grow.

No Hidden Fees

We haven’t raised our price in 20 years. It’s $125/year—no hidden fees or per document charges. For five or more states, it’s just $100/year per state.

Northwest has been incredibly helpful and reactive in helping me set up my LLC and fix filing errors (from me) super quickly. I reached out to their support and their support was super helpful and responded within two hours. I’d absolutely recommend this service to anyone who wants to build their company without any headache!

I had the pleasure of working with Cady this evening. She was warm, friendly, and incredibly helpful in assisting me with setting up my LLC. I truly appreciated the personal touch she offered throughout the process. It’s reassuring to know that I can reach out to her directly by phone or email if I have any further questions.

Amazing company. It was a breeze starting my new business and they helped get my current business complaint with the state in just a few clicks. Amanda Brooke was so friendly and made everything so smooth and easy. Northwest is the best registered service, I highly recommend.

I’ve used this company for a few years now for my LLC and to do a few different things; such as annual minutes, converting my LLC from CA to ID, and such. They are really good at following up and letting you know the process for whatever you need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, all states allow for you to be your own company’s registered agent. In fact, any individual or business that meets a state’s registered agent requirements can be a registered agent. Some states even allow a corporation or LLC to be its own registered agent.

The real question is, should you be your own registered agent?

Registered agents are charged with important responsibilities that can greatly impact your business. If you’re not regularly available to accept legal notices in person at the location listed on your public documents, you should not be your own registered agent.

Listing your own name and home address can mean giving up a chunk of your personal privacy because registered agent information becomes part of the public record.
